Dream Piece and the Song of Narcissus

By Kirk Wood Bromley / Directed and produced by Bruce Wall

At the Kraine Theater on 4th St., NYC

For a half a night at some point in 1991 or 1992

Bruce Wall, an actor who was in All Must Be Admitted, asked Bromley for “something new.” So, he translated two short plays – The Dream Piece by Karl Kraus (German) and The Song of Narcissus by Paul Valery (French). A large cast, with a composer and pianist, rehearsed and prepared for opening night. The theater, the Kraine, had been the headquarters for the Ukrainian KGB for many years, but had been recently bought by a couple who wanted to make it into a theater. Bromley and Wall got a deal on the space in exchange for agreeing to “clean it out.” Somewhere in the middle of opening night, which was the only night, water burst through the ceiling and poured onto the audience. Apparently, the toilets that Bromley and Wall had “cleaned out” had “backed up” and “overflowed” causing the ceiling to “break through” under the “incredible pressure” of “waste matter.” The performance was cancelled.
